There comes a point in time when you have to say, "ok - I'm done editing."
I decided to finally export and share this video on mother's day (I'm convinced I would have worked on it for the rest of my life). A lot of the comments I received were people telling me how lucky I am to have had a significant amount of my childhood documented on camera. It is incredible watching all 7 of us grow up in about 10 minutes. I made this video so that my family could find more closure from selling our childhood home and to outshine the events that happened towards the end of that chapter. I hope this inspires families to make an effort to capture moments like this.

Yes, yes that is my balling my eyes out at age 7.
Career wise, 2016 was more than I could ask for. I've been blessed with hours of video practice right out of college and my portfolio is looking full. However, I think my most valued moment of 2016 was becoming a homeowner. For the first 19 years of my life I was lucky enough to have the same home. For the last 5 years I rented 4 different houses and even though I consider my roommates family, I never felt like I could call those places, "home." Something was missing. In 2015, after 20+ years of ownership, my parents sold the Gatchellville house. Ever since then I have been converting over 100 VHS tapes into video files and working on this monstrosity of a montage. It has been a highly emotional experience watching my siblings and I grow up in this house (and also highly amusing). This is just a small segment of the video I am working on. When I showed this sneak peek at our family Christmas party, everyone laughed and cheered, "again again!" when it was finished playing. I think it would be fun to film their reaction when the whole video is finished. (Fingers crossed I don't forget by then!) I'm not sure why I have felt "home" less the last 5 years. Perhaps it is because I needed the closure of my childhood home selling. Or maybe it was because I haven't been putting candles in every window for Christmas. I'm sure there are many factors, but I am so happy heading into 2017. Music: John Butler, "Ocean"
I put a quick video together in hopes that others are inspired to support - or even start - a project that is for a good cause, My friend, Cameron Knight, has been selling these wreaths/decorations and giving all the money raised to help homelessness in Baltimore and Harford County. go.rallyup.com/wreathes4-homeless
In middle school, I would feed the hungry with my church and we often raised money for hungry children. When my sister and I were in High School, we donated all of our Christmas gift money to a child that our French class was sponsoring. Once college struck and money was tight I helped pick up trash at a local elementary school. What's my point? There are so many different ways to help and so many people who needhelp. It also feels good to help - I'm not going to lie. What's your favorite way to volunteer/donate?
I recently traveled to York, PA to work on a creative look book project with the vintage boutique: Revolt Style Studio. It was an early and surprisingly chilly morning, but that didn't stop us from dancing in the streets and pushing models around in shopping carts. It brought me back to getting dressed up and shooting music videos with my sisters. Such a blast!
This project was very different from my other story/interview driven videos. Major kudos to Jess (owner of Revolt Style Studio) for using video in a creative way for her business. It's a powerful tool! Lots of ideas are brewing for the next time. Enjoy!
Cake, dancing, and pretty dresses? I could never turn down a wedding.

If you like visual snacks then Light City Festival is the place for you. In the process of racing to Harbor East for a shoot, I managed to grab a few great shots.

Sorry this is late! I have been sick the last few days and never got around to posting this piece of art.
For your viewing pleasure: Battle of the Belles. A never finished reality show that determines who will be the belle of the ball (We were really into Cinderella). A rich Paris drama queen, a fortune teller, a country mouse, a random chick from New York, and a Russian native dancer named, BON-FEE-KAH, gather with host, Camille Cucumber, for a show that is a cross between The Bachelor, America's Next Top Model, and the Miss America Pageant. Enjoy the same joke about mispronounced names repeated at least 12 times, Fantastic character development - except for Justine - because she never plays interesting characters, and the worst piano rendition of The Entertainer ever played. Who do you think should have been named Belle of the Ball? Battle of the Belles from Justine Hulsey on Vimeo. |
